The Power Behind Lighting a Diya

Brass Diya

Brass Diya is not just a pooja essential but have a deep spiritual & cultural significance in India. Diya means auspicious lamp lit daily in Indian households. The warm light of the Diya is considered auspicious and represents enlightenment, prosperity, knowledge and wisdom. There are many rituals recommended for engaging our body and mind in the service of God & lighting a Diya before the deity is one of them.

A Ritual of Awakening & Renewal Every Morning

Rituals are the expressions of Devotion. Lighting a Diya is the purest form of offering to the deity.  In every Hindu home, a lamp or Diya is lit every day in pooja room, near Tulsi plant and at the entrance of the house for auspiciousness. Lighting the diya half an hour before sunrise aligns our inner light with the rising sun, symbolizing awakening and renewal. It’s a way to begin our day with intention, clarity, and spiritual grounding. Dev kaal or Brahma mahurat (4 am to 6 am) is considered the most auspicious to light a diya and get charged with divine energies every day.

To Invoke Divine presence & create a spiritual ambience

The upward moving flame of the Diya is considered the form of the Supreme God. Lighting a diya is a direct invitation for divine energies to reside in your space. Lighting a Diya brings blessings of the divine and spreads positive energy in the environment. The flickering flame is believed to absorb and burn negative vibrations. It helps to create a spiritual ambience in and around the place by removing the negative energy & purifying the space.

Aligning our Fire Element

Fire is one of the five elements of Panch Tattvas. Lighting a Brass Diya align our fire element with the Divine. By lighting a diya, we invoke Agni to harmonize our Panchmahabhutas. It purifies the air(akasha), sharpen the mind (vayu), balance emotions (jal), and energize the body (prithvi).

As a Symbol of Positivity to awaken our Inner Self:

Light of the Diya is considered sacred because it dispels the darkness of Maya (illusion) and connects us to the divine. It is believed that the light of the lamp symbolizes knowledge, the wick symbolizes the false ego of the living entity and ghee or oil symbolizes all the negative tendencies accumulated in the heart such as greed, lust, anger, and envy. When the lamp is lit by spiritual knowledge, the false ego is burnt. Just as the light of the lamp dissipates all darkness, similarly, the light of knowledge dissipates ignorance of the Jivas and enables us to realize our real identity and purpose of life.
