Symbolism of Natraj

Symbolism of Natraj

Nataraja depicts Lord Shiva performing the Ananda Tandava the Dance of bliss symbolizing the eternal cycles of creation, preservation, and destruction — the rhythm of the universe itself. The Circle of Flames the Prabha Mandala represents the cosmic fire that both creates and consumes. It’s the boundary of time and space, the illusion (Maya) that binds the soul.

The drum (Damru) in the upper right hand signifies the sound of creation; the primal vibration (Om) that initiates existence. Upper Left Hand Holds fire, the force of destruction and transformation. Together with the drum, it shows Shiva’s dual role as creator and destroyer.

Lower Right Hand is in Abhaya Mudra

Lower Right Hand is in Abhaya Mudra

A gesture of protection and reassurance. Lower left hand the Gaja hasta Points to the raised foot, symbolizing liberation and grace. Raised left foot is the symbol of liberation from ignorance and worldly illusion. Right foot crushing the dwarf demon of ignorance, ego, and forgetfulness — a reminder that spiritual awakening requires overcoming illusion. His flowing locks represent wild energy; the presence of Goddess Ganga symbolizes purification and divine grace. Third Eye represents Insight and the power to destroy evil. The Lotus Pedestal is the foundation of divine creation and purity.
